The film Conclave is one of the most talked about premieres of 2024. The story of the election of the new Pope keeps you in suspense until the last minute and ends with an unexpected and very subtle twist that changes the perception of everything you saw. But why didn't everyone understand the ending? We explain.
The main character, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), takes part in a closed Conclave, where a group of cardinals must choose a new Pope. There are several candidates, but the favorite is Cardinal Benitez, a kind, determined and respectable man.
However, Lawrence learns a shocking truth: Benitez is intersex, suffered an injury in his youth, and only then learned about his biological characteristics. He was raised as a man, but his body contains characteristics of both sexes. Despite this, he accepted himself as he is and continued his ministry.

The decision Lawrence must make becomes a real test. He can reveal the truth and start a new wave of elections. Or keep the secret, respecting Benitez's choice and the trust of the previous Pope, who knew about this peculiarity and still appointed him a cardinal.
"I realized that this man has more faith than all of us put together," Lawrence explains, realizing that Benitez does not violate any dogmas, but on the contrary, can breathe new meaning into the Church.
The finale of Conclave is not only about secrets. It is about humanity, acceptance and that rare moment when strength is not in loud words, but in silent trust. Cardinal Lawrence makes a choice in favor of faith, not only in God, but also in man. And with this, the film makes the viewer think: can the Church be ready for change and for the truth that was previously considered impossible.
