To celebrate this milestone, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical has been meticulously restored and remastered by the Walt Disney Film Restoration team, with a new version set to be released in stunning 4K resolution later this year.
Over a period of nine months, the restoration team conducted digital scanning of preserved film footage and performed expert clean-up to rectify any dirt, warping, or other issues encountered during the process. The 4K edition will be available for viewing in cinemas as well as on Blu-ray.
The film premiered on 2 March 1965, courtesy of 20th Century Fox, directed by Robert Wise and featuring a screenplay by Ernest Lehman. It was adapted from the stage musical with a score by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, alongside a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The film went on to win five Academy Awards in 1966, including Best Picture.
The Sound of Music stars Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp, Christopher Plummer as Captain George von Trapp, and features an ensemble cast including Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Charmian Carr, and many others who brought this timeless story to life.
