Gotham’s shadows are shifting again. The Batman: Part II, the eagerly anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 noir reboot, is now eyeing a March 2026 start date for filming in London. It’s a sign of forward motion after months of uncertainty — but not all is well in Wayne Manor.
In a development that’s been quietly brewing behind the scenes, Reeves is stepping back from the director’s chair. He remains involved as screenwriter, but will not be helming the project he once envisioned as a full trilogy.
This marks a significant turning point for the franchise. Reeves’ first Batman was praised for its moody atmosphere, grounded storytelling, and a brooding Robert Pattinson in the cape and cowl. His departure from the director’s seat, reportedly due to personal circumstances, raises inevitable questions: can the sequel maintain the same vision without its original architect? Warner Bros. appears determined to press on, but as of now, no new director has been announced — leaving the Bat-Signal hanging in the fog.

The sequel, officially announced at CinemaCon in 2022, was originally set for release in October 2026. That date has since been nudged back a full year to October 1, 2027, giving the studio more breathing room as it reshuffles behind the scenes. Still, with Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell expected to return — and Mattson Tomlin continuing in a co-writing role — the core of Gotham’s cast remains intact.
It’s not unusual for superhero sagas to weather storms behind the curtain. But Reeves was no hired gun — this was his Gotham, his mythos. The hope now is that his narrative voice will still guide the sequel’s tone, even as someone else calls the shots on set.
