This Unfairly Forgotten Al Pacino Film Won’t Leave You Indifferent — Directed by the Actor Himself

Al Pacino

An adaptation of a stage play will show you Al Pacino as you’ve likely never seen him before.

Among film lovers, the name Al Pacino is often associated with several of the actor’s iconic performances in crime dramas — just think of The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola or Scarface by Brian De Palma. And yet, the immense success of such films has overshadowed other works that are no less worthy of the audience’s attention — and in some ways, even more personal projects for Al Pacino.

Back in 2000, the actor directed a dramatic film based on a play by Ira Lewis, also starring in the lead role. Although the film never found wide popularity, it stands out for featuring Pacino in an entirely unrecognizable role.

Chinese Coffee was Al Pacino’s second directorial effort

Before that, the actor had already sat in the director’s chair for the documentary Looking for Richard, and a few years later he turned to drama, directing Chinese Coffee and starring in one of the lead roles alongside Jerry Orbach. At first glance, the film may seem rather unappealing to those used to seeing Pacino in crime thrillers — its plot centers on two friends, and the entire film essentially unfolds as a dialogue between them about everything that has built up over the years.

Chinese Coffee

Nevertheless, in Chinese Coffee, the actor sheds the now-familiar mask of Michael Corleone, instead appearing as Harry — a life-worn, insecure, and unsuccessful writer. Orbach plays Jake, an equally struggling photographer whom Harry visits to retrieve the manuscript of his unpublished book. Their conversation, full of memories and regrets, ends up lasting the entire night.

Al Pacino Will Return to Screens Soon — as King Lear

Although the actor recently turned 85, he continues to work tirelessly — several completed films are expected to be released soon, and Pacino is possibly already involved in a few new projects.

For instance, he will soon be seen in a new film adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, in which Pacino plays the title role. Joining him on screen will be Jessica Chastain, cast as Goneril, King Lear’s eldest daughter. The release date for King Lear has not yet been revealed, but it is expected to premiere sometime next year.
