In the world of crime dramas, where new projects appear every month, it’s easy to miss something really worthwhile. The series Dope Thief , released on Apple TV, has not become the object of a loud advertising campaign, but it definitely deserves the attention of fans of the genre.
Dope Thief: an unconventional plot
Ray and Manny meet in a juvenile colony and after their release come up with an original way to make money. They pretend to be DEA agents and rob small-time dealers. But their next case involves them in a dangerous game with a major cartel and real special agents.
Dream Team
Apple TV adapted the novel by Dennis Tafoya. The script was written by Peter Craig, who worked on the films Top Gun: Maverick, The Town and the new Batman. The director of the first episode was Ridley Scott himself, who is also the producer of the show. The main roles were played by Brian Tyree Henry (Atalanta) and Wagner Moura (Narcos. Mexico).
Drama, not action
Dope Thief may disappoint those who expect a stream of action from it. There are shootouts and chases, but first of all it is a drama about characters and a plot, like in The Wire or Mayor of Kingstown. The series shows a harsh world with cruel morals, where there are almost no positive characters.
Dope Thief is definitely worth watching if you do not avoid such genres. It has everything a good crime drama needs: an interesting plot, colorful characters and an atmosphere of hopelessness.
