This 'Harry Potter' Character Was Supposed to Die in the Finale – But the Scene Was Cut

Stills from the film 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'

Colin Creevey disappeared from the movies, and his story was rewritten – but why?

Throughout Harry Potter’s journey at Hogwarts, many background characters made a lasting impact on fans. One of the most memorable was Colin Creevey, the starstruck young Gryffindor who idolized Harry and was always seen snapping pictures. Introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Colin was a bright-eyed Muggle-born student whose enthusiasm knew no bounds. But after his role in the second film, Colin mysteriously vanished from the franchise — even though he had a significant presence in the books. So, why was he cut?

Why Did Colin Creevey Disappear From the Harry Potter Movies?

Colin Creevey played a key role in Chamber of Secrets, famously becoming one of the victims of the Basilisk’s deadly gaze — only escaping death because he viewed the creature through his camera lens. Though he was later cured, Colin never returned to the films, despite appearing in the later books.

There was never an official explanation from Warner Bros. about his absence. However, fans have speculated that the reason for Colin’s removal was a growth spurt. His character was meant to be a young, innocent presence, and as actor Hugh Mitchell got older, he no longer fit the part. This theory gained traction because another character, created specifically for the movies, seemed to take his place.

Colin Creevey Was Replaced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, fans were introduced to Nigel Wolpert, a new Gryffindor student played by William Melling. While Nigel wasn’t in the books, his role closely mirrored that of Colin Creevey and his younger brother, Dennis Creevey. Like Colin, Nigel was an eager young student who admired Harry and later joined Dumbledore’s Army.

During a LeakyCon 2012 interview, Melling revealed that Nigel was originally supposed to meet the same fate as Colin Creevey in the final battle. However, because the actor grew taller and looked less childlike, the filmmakers ultimately removed his death scene. It’s possible that the same logic applied to Hugh Mitchell, leading to Colin’s disappearance from the films altogether.

What Happened to Colin Creevey in the Harry Potter Books?

Had the movies followed Colin’s full storyline, fans would have seen him remain one of Harry’s most loyal supporters, despite Harry’s reluctance to drag younger students into his troubles. In the books, Colin continued to fight alongside Dumbledore’s Army. Although all underage students were ordered to leave Hogwarts before the Battle of Hogwarts, Colin snuck back in and fought bravely. However, he was killed in the battle, and Harry later found his lifeless body in the Great Hall, deeply affected by the loss of such a young student.

Could Colin’s Story Be Restored in the Upcoming TV Series?

While the films cut Colin’s later arc, the upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot could be a chance to give him the screen time he deserved. Casting a younger actor or using different techniques to maintain his childlike innocence throughout the series might allow the show to finally bring his full journey to life. Though Colin was never a major player in the grand scheme of Harry’s story, he added a whimsical, youthful charm to the saga — one that many fans hope to see return.
