This 'Breaking Bad' Actor Once Considered Suicide — What Stopped the Real-Life Gus Fring?

Stills from the series 'Breaking Bad' (2008)

Harsh realities can truly break anyone.

The TV series Breaking Bad has, in a literal sense, both saved and shaped the career of actor Giancarlo Esposito. Yes, who would have thought that a show about murders, drugs, and other vices would do such a good deed for a talented actor? The truth is, before landing his role in the series, Esposito was facing severe financial difficulties.

In 2008, he found himself on the brink of bankruptcy and even considered suicide so that his family could receive the life insurance payout. The actor had planned to stage an accident to secure his children's future.

Fortunately, Esposito abandoned this idea after realising that his death would inflict irreparable harm on his loved ones. The turning point in his life came with his role in Breaking Bad, which not only helped him escape financial ruin but also brought a new wave of popularity.

The actor portrayed Gustavo "Gus" Fring, a key antagonist in Breaking Bad and its prequel, Better Call Saul. Gus is depicted as a meticulous and calculating businessman who owns the fast-food chain Los Pollos Hermanos.

Beneath his respectable facade, he operates a vast drug empire, distributing methamphetamine across the Southwestern United States. Gus Fring's character serves as a formidable adversary to the protagonist, Walter White. His strategic mind and ruthlessness significantly influence the series' narrative, driving key plot developments:

Gus Fring is introduced in Season 2, Episode 11, titled "Mandala." He becomes a central figure throughout Seasons 3 and 4 of Breaking Bad. Esposito also reprised his role in Better Call Saul, appearing in Seasons 3 through 6, further exploring Gus's backstory and his rise in the criminal underworld.
