Hollywood's top directors and producers often work ahead of schedule, but plans don’t always go as intended. This has been especially true for Mickey 17, the latest project from South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. For two years, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning Parasite has faced multiple delays in setting a premiere date for his new film. Now, with Mickey 17 finally having a confirmed (hopefully final) release date, insiders have revealed the reasons behind the prolonged release.
Mickey 17 Was Delayed Due to Creative Differences Between Bong Joon-ho and Warner Bros.
Sources have uncovered that production on the film was completed as early as January 2023, with Bong initially planning to release it in January of that year. However, Warner Bros. producers stepped in, expressing dissatisfaction with certain scenes in the final cut. Another reason for the delay, according to insiders, was the lukewarm reception to the first two trailers for Mickey 17. The studio reportedly compared the response to trailers for upcoming films like Superman and Minecraft: The Movie, which generated significantly more excitement.
Lastly, there were concerns about the film's financial viability. With a production budget of approximately $80 million, Warner Bros. is reportedly apprehensive about the film’s ability to achieve the $200 million box office returns needed to break even.
The premiere of Mickey 17 is scheduled for March this year.
If all goes according to plan and no further disputes arise between the director and the studio, Mickey 17 is slated to hit theaters on March 7 this year. This would mark almost exactly a year since its original release date of March 29, 2024. Alongside Robert Pattinson, the film features an impressive cast, including Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.
