The Plan Is Crazy and a Little Romantic: Why Voldemort from 'Harry Potter' Created 7 Horcruxes

Still from the film 'Harry Potter'

Even Harry wasn't so sentimental.

Lord Voldemort is one of the most dangerous dark wizards in the history of magical Britain in the world of Harry Potter. His main weapon was not only magic, but also a unique innovation — a system of seven Horcruxes, which allowed him to survive even Avada Kedavra. But why exactly seven soul fragments, and not three or, say, ten?

The magical number 7 in the world of Harry Potter

The number seven plays a special role in the world of magic. It is found in different aspects of the universe of J.K. Rowling:

  • Seven years of study at Hogwarts;
  • Seven is the most powerful number in the world of magic;
  • The number seven has protective properties;
  • Seven players on a Quidditch team.
  • Voldemort, striving for absolute immortality, chose this number for a reason. In a twisted way, he remained a romantic who believed in symbolism.
Harry Potter Still

Voldemort simply couldn't create more Horcruxes

Horcruxes are objects in which a dark wizard seals a part of his soul. Ideally, to remain invulnerable, he should split the soul into as many parts as possible. But there is a catch:

The more parts, the weaker the soul becomes.

The process of splitting the soul itself is incredibly painful and destructive.

Voldemort decided that seven parts of the soul (six Horcruxes + his own body) is the perfect balance between quantity and preservation of strength. He wanted to make his soul "indestructible", but not to the point of becoming a completely uncontrollable ghost.

The irony is that the Dark Lord, being obsessed with the number seven, did not notice that his plan had failed. In fact, he split the soul into eight parts, because Harry Potter accidentally became the seventh Horcrux. And he defeated the dark wizard. Thus, his idea of the magical number 7 was unfulfilled, and his soul became unstable. That is why his defeat was predetermined from the very beginning, the magic he revered so much rejected him.
