The Other Side of the Coin: Documentary on 'Rust' Tragedy Calls to Charge More than Just Baldwin and Hanna Gutierrez

Global Look Press — still from the movie 'Rust'

The film highlights systemic failures, urging accountability for all involved.

Although several years have passed since the tragic incident on the set of Rust, when Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the story still lingers. The new documentary, Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, offers a fresh perspective on the heartbreaking events. The movie is currently holding the top position on Hulu's streaming charts.

Per Movieweb, the documentary challenges the oversimplified narrative of pure innocence versus total guilt. It blends familiar news clips and police interviews with never-before-seen footage, including a revealing conversation with an OSHA investigator who uncovered a disturbing pattern of unsafe practices on the Rust set. Other testimonies shed light on further safety issues, which prompted many of Hutchins' colleagues to walk off in protest.

These concerns forced Hutchins to stand near Alec Baldwin while he aimed the loaded gun, rather than observing the scene from a safe distance on set monitors. Through a careful presentation of these events, the documentary highlights an important truth: the people on trial for Hutchins' death, including Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed, are not the sole ones responsible.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin was ultimately justified, as it was determined that the shooting was an accident. However, Hanna Gutierrez-Reed, the film's armorer, was charged for her role in the unsafe handling of the firearms on set.
