Wes Anderson’s films are the stuff of cinematic dreams — pastel-hued worlds brimming with eccentric characters and symmetry so precise it borders on obsession. For many actors, securing a role in one of his films is a coveted career moment. But for one acclaimed actress, it’s been a series of polite refusals — four of them, to be exact.
In a recent interview with Collider, Anderson revealed that he has repeatedly tried to cast Jodie Foster over the years, often approaching her for roles in multiple consecutive projects. "It used to be every movie, we went to Jodie Foster for a part," he said. "And I think I did it three movies in a row, maybe four." Though he met her and was optimistic about the collaboration, it never materialised.
Anderson now seems resigned to the idea that the stars may never align. "I still would like to get Jodie Foster. But I guess after asking a few times… maybe we weren’t right," he admitted, suggesting that Foster’s own artistic compass may simply point in another direction. "I think sometimes somebody has an idea of the kind of work they want to do at that time in his or her life, and we weren’t right."

True to form, Anderson declined to reveal which roles he had offered her — not out of secrecy, but courtesy. "If I say, then you say, ‘'Oh, you mean so-and-so wasn’t your first choice,'" he said with a laugh. Still, he called her "pretty amazing," which feels like both a compliment and a quiet farewell.
Foster, famously selective in her work, has appeared in just four films over the past decade. Perhaps the whimsical worlds of Anderson simply don’t align with her grounded instincts.
