The New 'Snow White' is a Faded Echo of Another Disney Remake — Its Fate was Sealed

The film was doomed from the start, trying to follow a worn path.

Disney’s new Snow White adaptation, set for release in 2025, has already sparked a wave of criticism. This comes despite the studio’s long-standing success in remaking its animated classics into live-action films. However, with Snow White, things seem to be going off track. Western critics believe the film aimed to replicate the success of the 2015 Cinderella remake but missed two key elements.

Firstly, the villain. In Cinderella, Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of the stepmother was masterfully developed. Lady Tremaine was not just a caricatured villain but a complex character with clear motivation and depth.

In the new Snow White, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot) lacks this depth. Her obsession with beauty and power is diluted by attempts to explore her past and influence over the kingdom. As a result, she loses the chilling charisma that made the animated version one of the greatest villains in film history.

Secondly, the protagonist. In Cinderella, director Kenneth Branagh showcased the heroine’s growth and transformation. In the new Snow White, Rachel Zegler, despite her talent, plays a character who remains too static. This Snow White is kind and strong, but her journey lacks the drama and transformation that could make the story more compelling.

Ultimately, the new Snow White suffers from an overloaded plot and a lack of focus. Instead of honing in on the key elements that made the original a classic, the film tries to do too much. As a result, it becomes a pale imitation of Cinderella, standing little chance of success from the outset.
