Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive is shaping up to be an unexpected return to the iconic Western franchise, nearly 35 years after the last installment. Emilio Estevez, reprising his role as Billy the Kid, is not only back in front of the camera but also behind it as the director. But the real twist comes with a fresh direction for the story, expanding the narrative with a diverse and dynamic cast.
During the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Estevez confirmed the return of Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater, both of whom were not shown dying on screen in previous films.
"We didn’t see either of them die on camera, and we certainly didn’t see Billy the Kid die. So, there's potential for several more installments,” he teased.

The plot, as Estevez detailed, follows a new generation of regulators, many of them Latino and Indigenous, in the midst of the Mexican Revolution.
"It centers around a bunch of new regulators... taking place mostly in Mexico," he explained.
The story also brings Billy the Kid into contact with a young Pancho Villa, whose group of revolutionaries is fueled by the tensions surrounding human trafficking, German support, and the looming shadows of World War I.
Estevez highlighted the cultural authenticity of Young Guns 3, noting that the film will feature a significant Latino and Indigenous cast, which he believes feels natural for the story. As the legacy of Young Guns continues, the mystery surrounding Billy the Kid's fate — whether he is dead or alive — remains central to the narrative, and with the new film, this question could mark the start of even more developments in the saga.
