It seems there is segregation in the Academy when it comes to some directors. Otherwise, how can one explain the fact that Denis Villeneuve, for the second time, was not given the opportunity to compete for an Oscar nomination for Best Director?
This is the second time Villeneuve has been ignored, even though his film Dune has been nominated in several categories, including Best Cinematography, Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. The first part, released in 2021, was nominated in 10 categories and won 6 statues including categories of Cinematography, Editing, Score, Visual Effects, Production Design, and Sound.
Notably, the second part has been warmly received by audiences. The film’s box office performance was quite strong — $106 million in the U.S. and $204.3 million worldwide. Although science fiction is often considered unwelcome at the Oscars, the nominations and victories of both Dune films prove otherwise. Yet, despite this success, the director remains somewhat of a persona non grata at the Academy.

Dune (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve, covers the first half of Frank Herbert’s novel, focusing on Paul Atreides, whose family is betrayed after taking control of the desert planet Arrakis. Paul survives and begins to discover his destiny amid political intrigue and the harsh desert.
Dune: Part Two (2024) will continue Paul’s journey as he embraces his leadership role, battles for control of Arrakis, and fulfills his prophetic destiny, deepening his connection with the Fremen, the planet’s native people. In the second part, Timothée Chalamet is joined by Zendaya and newcomer Austin Butler, whose charismatic performance left a lasting impression on audiences.
As of now, there hasn't been any official confirmation about a Dune: Part Three. Denis Villeneuve has expressed interest in continuing the story, depending on the success of Dune: Part Two. If it happens, the third film would likely explore Paul Atreides' rise to power and the consequences of his actions on Arrakis.
