The Hidden Meaning Behind the Oscar-Winning 'Flow': A Haunting Refrain of Human Truths

Still from the animated movie 'Flow' (2024)

A Tale of Fate, Connection, and Survival.

The animated film Flow recently won an Oscar, a recognition many deemed well deserved. But let’s be honest — some may find it a slow-burning drama about surviving animals in a surreal world, where a global catastrophe has wiped out humanity, leaving only creatures to reign.

A film often described as meditative, Flow contains no dialogue — only the sounds of nature and animals. Yet, despite its seemingly slow pace, it manages to captivate. The visuals alone are breathtaking! In the scene where dogs chase the kitten, a dynamic tracking shot is used, creating a third-person perspective that enhances the sense of immersion — almost as if you're playing a video game, just without the controller.

The story follows a kitten and several other animals who, by a twist of fate, find themselves aboard the same boat, forced to rely on one another to survive. With almost no land left after the great flood, the five companions set off in search of shelter. At first glance, the plot may seem simple — the kitten, a cautious and distrustful loner, gradually learns to trust as he journeys alongside a capybara, a badger, a lemur, and a secretary bird. Together, they navigate a submerged world, facing dangers, constant change, and the ever-present current pulling them towards the unknown.

Beyond their many adventures, the characters slowly reveal their true selves to one another. The kitten, initially wary of others, begins to recognize their genuine attempts to help. The badger gives him shelter, and the secretary bird rescues him from drowning, lifting him from the island just in time. Eventually, he even starts sharing his caught fish with the others. Over time, they form a close-knit group, and when a pack of surviving dogs boards their boat, attempting to disrupt the balance, they stand together to resist.

Despite its minimalist narrative, the film is strikingly dynamic. The title Flow is no coincidence — the current itself acts as the film’s narrator, governing everything, ever-changing, never allowing the characters to remain in one place for long. It reigns over all, yet one fascinating detail stands out: the current, much like fate, is inescapable.

At first, the kitten struggles against it, repeatedly falling into the water and barely staying afloat. But when he finally stops resisting, he catches a glimpse of the ocean’s hidden beauty. His gentle movements and wide-eyed gaze at the marine life around him exude a sense of calm, as if he has finally become part of the flow itself.

Then, in a moment, everything shifts once more — the kitten is alone again, with no friends, no land beneath his paws, only the relentless current surrounding him… And just when all seems lost, something extraordinary happens. (But that, of course, we won’t spoil.)

There have been many films and animations about animals conveying simple human truths. Flow does not reinvent the wheel, but if you give it a chance, you may find yourself swept away by its current — becoming part of this profoundly moving journey.
