The Director of 'Carry-On' Takes a Dark Turn With 'The Woman in the Yard' — Psychological Horror Rooted in Grief

Still from the movie 'The Woman in the Yard' (2025)

When sorrow manifests, it may take an unexpected form.

Following the success of his 2024 action-thriller Carry-On, director Jaume Collet-Serra returns with The Woman in the Yard, a psychological horror film that delves into the manifestations of grief. Released in cinemas on March 28, 2025, this psychological horror film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, a widow grappling with the aftermath of a tragic accident that claimed her husband's life.

Ramona's struggle is compounded by the appearance of a mysterious figure — a woman clad in black — who stands motionless in her yard, delivering ominous warnings. This enigmatic character is portrayed by Okwui Okpokwasili, whose silent yet commanding presence adds layers of unease to the film's atmosphere. As the plot unfolds, the line between reality and hallucination blurs, compelling Ramona to confront her deepest fears and the spectres of her past.

The supporting cast includes Russell Hornsby as David, Ramona's late husband, with Peyton Jackson and Estella Kahiha playing their children, Taylor and Annie. Their performances contribute to a poignant exploration of a family fractured by loss and the haunting nature of unresolved guilt.

While the film's initial release is exclusively in theatres, plans for streaming availability remain unannounced. Audiences seeking a cinematic experience that intertwines psychological depth with supernatural elements will find The Woman in the Yard a compelling addition to the horror genre.
