‘Superman’ (2025): Can James Gunn’s Vision Soar to New Heights?

Still from the film ‘Superman’ (2025)

A review of the expected new movie.

Superman is back, and I can’t help but feel both excited and cautiously optimistic. With Superman (2025), James Gunn takes the reins of the Man of Steel’s next cinematic chapter, marking a crucial turning point for DC’s revamped universe. Given Gunn’s track record — balancing heart, humor, and deep character development in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad — I’m eager to see how his unique style will shape the most iconic superhero of all time. But will his approach capture the awe-inspiring legacy of Superman while introducing a fresh take for modern audiences?

A New Superman, A New Era

David Corenswet steps into the red cape, a bold but intriguing choice for Clark Kent. With his classic Superman look and a strong dramatic background (Pearl, Hollywood), he has the potential to bring both warmth and gravitas to the role. The real challenge? Stepping out of the long shadow cast by Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, and even Brandon Routh. But if Gunn’s script allows for an emotionally rich, hopeful portrayal, Corenswet might just redefine the Last Son of Krypton for a new generation.

A Cast Full of Potential

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is an inspired casting move. After her award-winning turn in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, we know she can deliver wit, intelligence, and a take-no-nonsense attitude—all essential traits for the iconic journalist. Then there’s Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, a fascinating choice. Hoult has proven his ability to oscillate between charm and menace (The Great, Mad Max: Fury Road), making him a potentially layered and unpredictable villain.

Gunn’s Signature Touch — Does It Fit Superman?

James Gunn has a distinct directorial voice — irreverent humor, strong character work, and emotional gut punches. But Superman is not a misfit or an antihero like Star-Lord or Peacemaker. He’s the symbol of hope, the aspirational figure who inspires humanity. The question is, can Gunn shift gears and deliver a film that embodies Superman’s sincerity while keeping it fresh and engaging? If he manages to blend The Guardians of the Galaxy’s heart with the epic scope of Man of Steel, we might be in for something truly special.

The Look and Feel of Metropolis

While we haven’t seen much official footage yet, early set photos hint at a classic Metropolis aesthetic — bright, hopeful, and distinctly different from the brooding tones of Zack Snyder’s Superman films. The DCU needs a fresh start, and visually embracing a more vibrant, comic-accurate style could be a key move.

What’s at Stake?

This isn’t just another Superman movie — it’s the foundation of DC’s new cinematic universe. If it works, it could set the tone for the next decade of superhero storytelling. If it fails, it could be another setback for DC’s rocky film history. But with Gunn’s passion for comics, a promising cast, and a renewed commitment to storytelling over spectacle, there’s plenty of reason to be hopeful.

Final Verdict — Sky-High Expectations

We’re still months away from the release, but the anticipation is undeniable. Superman (2025) has the potential to deliver a fresh, emotionally resonant take on the Man of Steel while reestablishing him as the gold standard of superheroes. The key will be in Gunn’s balance — honoring Superman’s classic ideals while infusing just enough of his own signature style.

Will it soar? Or will it struggle under the weight of expectations? We’ll find out soon enough. But for now, I’m ready to believe in Superman all over again.
