Chris Columbus may have wanted to cut Donald Trump’s cameo from Home Alone 2 — but fate had other plans. The director, it seems, isn’t quite ready to risk his standing in America.
Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Columbus admitted he wishes Trump’s Home Alone 2 cameo never happened — but joked he can’t cut it now, unless he’s ready to be deported himself.
"If I cut it, I'll probably be sent out of the country. I'll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I'll have to go back to Italy or something."

Columbus reflected that, although he once believed he understood comedy, he clearly misjudged the situation — never expecting the scene to be seen as hilarious. Years later, he admitted, it feels more like a curse — something he genuinely wishes had never been included.
The director also pushed back against Trump’s old claim that the filmmakers had begged him to appear in the scene. According to Trump, he was too busy and reluctant at first, but agreed after what he described as "very persistent" requests. Columbus, it seems, remembers it differently.
"What’s going through this guy’s mind.? He said I begged him to be in the movie, but there's no world I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie".

Columbus, reiterating what he’d said back in 2020, explained that Trump only allowed them to film at the Plaza Hotel — his property at the time — on two conditions: a fee and a cameo. Columbus needed the location, so he agreed.
