Director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Gosling took the stage at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, announcing their highly anticipated project, Star Wars: Starfighter.
Levy emphasized that this film is neither a prequel nor a sequel, but rather "a new adventure," dispelling various rumors surrounding the project. Gosling praised the story for its originality and emotional depth, stating that it features "great characters" and "so much heart and adventure." He expressed confidence in Levy as the perfect director for this unique narrative.
For the past two years, Starfighter has been shrouded in secrecy, being penned by Jonathan Tropper. Unlike other upcoming projects from Disney’s Lucasfilm — such as those by James Mangold and Simon Kinberg — this standalone film will not focus on the core Luke Skywalker saga. Levy's involvement is notable; he previously directed Disney's highest-grossing R-rated film, Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.33 billion globally. This new installment will follow next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, marking an exciting expansion of the Star Wars universe.
