Quantum Cobra, Sword Lord and Budgie the Acid-Bird — 'Kung Fury' Director Stars in His Next Insane Adventure

David Sandberg

The weirdest team-up you never knew you needed.

While Kung Fury 2 continues to languish in post-production purgatory, its creator David Sandberg is charging full-speed into a new cinematic dimension. His next project, titled Dragonlord, promises a gleefully anarchic blend of fantasy, sci-fi, action, and irreverent comedy — or, as Sandberg describes it, "fantasy punk". At the centre of the madness is Dragonlord himself (played by Sandberg), a roguish treasure hunter whose quest begins when his sidekick — a slacker Tyrannosaurus Rex named Blaze — is kidnapped by a villain known only as Dreadmancer.

What follows is an odyssey through a world that seems stitched together from Saturday morning cartoons, VHS-fuelled nostalgia, and sheer creative chaos. Dragonlord recruits a mismatched crew that includes Quantum Cobra, a tech wizard with attitude; Sword Lord, a former henchman who switched sides after falling in love with his unicorn; and Budgie, a humanoid bird with the unfortunate habit of excreting acid.

Though tonally akin to Kung Fury — absurdist, self-aware, and gloriously unfiltered — Dragonlord will make use of cutting-edge virtual production techniques, elevating the visual spectacle far beyond its green-screen-heavy predecessor. With a reported budget of $20 million and production aimed for spring 2026, the film is currently in the scripting phase, with casting set to begin soon.

Kung Fury: The Movie

The project rises from the ashes of frustration. Kung Fury 2, which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Fassbender, has been stuck in limbo since 2019 due to legal disputes with a Chinese financier. Sandberg has described the delay as "heartbreaking," admitting it triggered a deep creative slump. But out of that came something new — and potentially even more unhinged.
