Born on May 18, 1924, in New York City, Pointer began her career in theater in the late 1940s, including performances on Broadway. She transitioned to television and film in the 1970s, gaining recognition for portraying maternal figures. Notably, she played Rebecca Barnes Wentworth, the mother of Cliff Barnes and Pamela Barnes Ewing, in 44 episodes of the TV series Dallas from 1981 to 1983. In the 1976 horror film Carrie, she appeared alongside her real-life daughter, Amy Irving.
