Cristian Mungiu, the Romanian auteur behind 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, has completed production on his latest feature — and it’s his most international yet. Titled Fjord, the film was shot in Norway and is based on real events involving a Romanian family caught in the crosshairs of the country’s child protection system. It marks a geographic and thematic shift for Mungiu, whose previous films have remained firmly rooted in his homeland’s post-communist fabric.
Sebastian Stan leads the cast alongside Renate Reinsve, the Norwegian star of The Worst Person in the World, in what’s described as a gripping legal and moral drama. The story centres on a domestic incident that triggers a state investigation, eventually spiralling into a high-profile trial with national implications — and deep divisions. As state institutions and religious communities clash over the case, Fjord promises to explore the uncomfortable space between cultural identity, justice, and truth.
The film has been acquired by Neon for North American distribution, making it an early contender for major festival attention in 2026. Given Neon’s track record — five consecutive Palme d’Or winners — and Mungiu’s own Cannes pedigree, Fjord is already generating quiet awards buzz.

This will be Mungiu’s seventh feature, and his most expansive in scope. While his signature attention to social systems remains intact, Fjord introduces a new terrain — both literal and cinematic — that signals the director’s growing ambition without sacrificing his moral precision.
