‘Overly Studio-driven’: Robert Pattinson almost Gave up on Cinema

Robert Pattinson

The actor's concerns were not unfounded.

Robert Pattinson nearly lost faith in cinema. The actor confessed that in recent years he found himself thinking about retirement, discouraged by the struggles of the industry.

Among the challenges Robert Pattinson mentioned were the COVID pandemic and two major labor strikes. He reflected on how, over the past few years, many in the film industry had been declaring that cinema was dying. In an interview with Vanity Fair Pattinson admitted that, at times, he felt disillusioned, even starting to worry that the industry might be on the verge of collapse.

And he wasn’t alone in his concerns. The actor noticed, that for the past two years, many of his colleagues had been questioning the lack of exciting roles. While he didn’t mean to say that all the films that came out were uninteresting, he felt that many were overly studio-driven. He wasn’t sure what caused the shift, but now, he sees a surge of truly exciting roles emerging everywhere.

“Then looking in the last few months, there’s this flurry of very ambitious movies. I feel like the stuff that’s going to get nominated for Oscars this year is going to be really interesting, and it seems like there’s suddenly a new batch of directors who the audience is excited about as well. I saw this Norwegian movie Armand, which I thought was amazing. My friend Brady Corbet’s movie The Brutalist. Anora,” Pattinson summed up.
