The documentary unveils the emotional story of a life lived online.

Netflix’s heartfelt documentary, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, directed by Benjamin Ree, tells the extraordinary story of Mats Steen, a young Norwegian gamer who left an indelible mark both in the real world and in the virtual realm of World of Warcraft (WoW). Diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Mats passed away at the age of 25. However, through his online persona, Ibelin Redmoore, Mats lived a life far beyond the confines of his physical condition.

A Legacy Beyond Reality

Mats’ parents, Robert and Trude Steen, only began to fully understand the scope of their son’s life after his death. While they had always known him as a quiet and creative individual, it wasn’t until they received an outpouring of messages from his online community that they realized how impactful Mats had been. "Through Ibelin, he was able to be himself in a way that his illness wouldn’t allow," Robert Steen said.

In World of Warcraft, Mats wasn’t defined by his wheelchair or illness. As Ibelin, he was a hero, a friend, and a leader. The animated recreations of his in-game adventures in the documentary beautifully illustrate this digital life, where he forged meaningful relationships and created unforgettable memories with his guildmates.

A Story of Friendship and Belonging

The documentary brings Mats’ virtual connections to life through interviews with his online friends, who recount their time with Ibelin. "He wasn’t just a character; he was the heart of our group," one friend shares. These reflections reveal a deep bond built on shared experiences, trust, and friendship.

Ree skillfully juxtaposes these testimonies with home videos of Mats’ life offline, painting a complete picture of a young man who found freedom and purpose in an unexpected space.

Redefining Connection

At its core, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin challenges preconceived notions about the online world. Rather than presenting it as isolating, the film showcases its capacity to create genuine and supportive communities. Mats’ story is a powerful reminder that identity and connection transcend physical limitations.

For Mats’ parents, the film is a way to honor their son and the life he built. "His friends in World of Warcraft gave him a world we could never imagine. They gave him joy and belonging," Robert said.

Critical Acclaim and Recognition

The The Remarkable Life of Ibelin has garnered critical acclaim, earning a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking. It also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
