Oscar Category for Stunts? Tom Hardy Disagrees with the Decision

Stills from the movie 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015)

The actor has a much better idea.

Tom Hardy disagrees with the idea of giving only one Oscar category for stunt performers. He actually wants several.

"When I saw it, I was like, 'At last!" Hardy said, reacting to the Academy’s decision. "But it's like, Um, it's not enough, to be fair, if we're really being honest. It's a good start. Brilliant, and about time. Now, the rest, the other two or three categories…" he continued in an interview with Extra’s special correspondent Jake Hamilton.

Hardy explained that Best Stunt Design was already an umbrella category, covering a wide range of work within the world of stunts. He stressed that much more needed to be recognised under that umbrella, although he admitted it was still a great start.

Earlier this year, the Academy finally announced the long-awaited decision: starting from 2026, stunt performers will officially have their own Oscar category. A historic move that fans and industry insiders have been demanding for decades. And if anyone knows a thing or two about stunts, it’s Hardy — from the brutal landscapes of Mad Max: Fury Road to the gritty showdowns in The Dark Knight Rises, he’s no stranger to high-octane action that relies heavily on the stunt teams' brilliance. No wonder he’s pushing for even more recognition.
