The Harry Potter films conquered the world — dazzling magic, battles between good and evil, great heroes and ruthless villains. But behind the scenes of the eight iconic movies lie hundreds of details that make the story feel more complete. Especially the story of Lord Voldemort himself. Who is he? Where does all that evil come from? And who were his parents?
These questions are rarely addressed directly in the films. Yet Tom Riddle, who became the Dark Lord, wasn’t simply a wizard obsessed with power. He was the product of generations steeped in darkness, fear, and broken love. His mother, Merope Gaunt, was the last descendant of an ancient line that traced back to Salazar Slytherin himself. His father, Tom Riddle Sr., was a Muggle whom Merope deceived into marrying her with the use of a love potion.
But the darkness in his blood didn’t come from his mother alone. One of Voldemort’s most sinister ancestors was the witch Gormlaith Gaunt. In the 17th century, she murdered her own sister, kidnapped her niece Isolt, and held her captive, forbidding her from using magic and instilling hatred of all Muggles. When Isolt escaped and founded the American school of magic Ilvermorny, Gormlaith followed her to the New World, but was killed after confronting her niece’s allies.

Generations of madness, isolation, and fanatical belief in 'pure blood' led the Gaunt family to degeneration. Voldemort was not the first dark wizard in his lineage. He was the final product of a terrifying dynasty, where malice was passed down through name and blood. And perhaps that’s why he feared his own humanity more than death itself.
