Not a Single 'Star Wars' Fan Can Answer This: What Kind of Being Is Yoda, Really?

Global Look Press — still from the movie 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith' (2005)

Even watching all the prequels and sequels won’t help.

He is a living legend. Jedi Master, philosopher, strategist, and the symbol of the light side of the Force. We know how he speaks, how he fights, how he dies. But we don’t know the most important thing — who is he, really? Where did he come from? What is his lineage? His planet? His species? The name of his kind, at the very least? All of this remains a black hole in the biography of the most iconic character in the Star Wars universe.

No name, no planet, no past

In a galaxy full of elaborate backstories where every character’s lineage is spelled out to the seventh generation, Yoda feels like an outsider from another universe. He is the only character whose species officially has no name. Even George Lucas, the saga’s creator, refused to provide any details. "Yoda must remain a mystery," he once said. And that was the end of it.

We don’t have the name of his people. We don’t know the name of his home planet. There isn’t a single canonical map where you can point and say: "He’s from here." All we’ve been given is green skin, three fingers, a tiny stature, and… nearly a thousand years of life. The rest is speculation, fan theories, and silence — thick as the fog on Dagobah.

The Mandalorian

Yoda’s first teacher was a serpent-like Jedi

There is just one known fragment that reveals anything about Yoda’s youth. Along with a human friend, he was traveling through space, crash-landed on a mysterious planet, and met N’Kata Del Gormo — a snake-like Jedi who saw potential in the little green stranger and began training him. A few years later, Yoda left the planet and enrolled in the Jedi Academy on Coruscant. But what happened to his friend? What planet was it? Why were they in space at all? — no answers were ever given.

It feels as though Yoda’s biography was deliberately cut short. As if his whole story is a tale that doesn’t begin with birth, but only with the moment he became needed.

Why did Lucas keep silent?

Fans have spent years trying to unravel Yoda’s mystery. Some looked for analogies in Eastern monastic traditions. Others speculated that his species was a living embodiment of the Force. Still others believed Yoda wasn’t truly 'alive' in the conventional sense, but rather a walking artifact of light and balance.

But Lucas held firm. Yoda was beyond categories. Beyond classification. He had to remain a mystery in order to retain his power.

And honestly? It worked. Because the less we know, the more he draws us in.

Yoda as a symbol that we don’t have to know everything

In a world where every second story gets a prequel, a backstory, and ten spin-offs, Yoda remains a unique phenomenon. A character with no past — yet one who shapes the future of the entire Galaxy. He is respected by all, yet no one truly knows where he came from.

And maybe that’s where his strength lies. Not in power, not in knowledge, not in battles. But in stillness. In the fact that Yoda is not about origin — but about the path.
