Hollywood is welcoming back its prodigal sons — and the Croisette is rolling out the red carpet. This weekend, Ezra Miller made a quiet yet unmistakable return to Cannes, dressed in a burgundy tuxedo, loose trousers, long flowing hair and a matching beret, as they appeared in support of director Lynne Ramsay. Though Miller didn’t stop for photographers, their presence was caught on camera — Variety even posted a video of the actor briskly walking the red carpet on its X (formerly Twitter) page, prompting a wave of online buzz.
Ramsay’s latest film, Die My Love, premieres on Saturday — and it was she who first harnessed Miller’s dark magnetism in 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, a chilling portrayal of teen violence that bowed in competition at Cannes. But in the years since, Miller’s trajectory has been anything but charmed.
Once heralded as one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic rising stars, they became engulfed in controversy: multiple arrests for assault and disorderly conduct, deeply troubling allegations involving minors, and a chaotic chapter living on a Vermont farm reportedly surrounded by firearms and children. The release of The Flash — once poised as a DC tentpole — arrived under a shadow of scandal and underperformed accordingly.
Still, Cannes has always made space for cinematic outliers. Kevin Spacey, another figure long cast out by Hollywood, is also set to make an appearance — and in a headline-grabbing twist, he’ll be honoured with the Award for Excellence in Film and Television.
