Titled The Paper, the show follows a documentary crew as they explore a historic but struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. The series stars Domhnall Gleeson as the publisher and features Oscar Nuñez reprising his role as Oscar Martinez from the original series. Peacock announced that The Paper will debut this September, with the first image released showing Nuñez alongside Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore.
Nuñez shared during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation that he discussed with showrunner Greg Daniels about Oscar moving to Toledo, Ohio — an area with three times the population of Scranton, where The Office was set. Daniels revealed that much of the original crew from The Office is returning for this new mockumentary, which explores a Midwestern newspaper trying to survive in the digital age. The story centers on Gleeson’s character attempting to revive the paper with a limited budget, relying on untrained staff working as volunteers amid declining ad revenue due to internet giants like Google.
Produced by Universal Television, The Paper is executive produced by Daniels and Koman alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant of The Office, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. Fans can look forward to this humorous take on local journalism’s challenges arriving soon on Peacock.
