Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice may soon crown its Mr. Darcy — and the role could go to Emmy-nominated actor Jack Lowden. According to Variety, the Slow Horses star is currently in discussions to take on the famously complex romantic lead in the new series based on Jane Austen’s 1813 classic.
While Netflix has declined to comment on casting, the project is quietly gaining momentum. First announced last year, the series is being written by Dolly Alderton, the bestselling author behind Everything I Know About Love, known for her sharp and emotionally resonant storytelling. No official cast has been revealed, though early speculation in the British press suggested Daisy Edgar-Jones might be attached to play Elizabeth Bennet — another piece of casting yet to be confirmed.
If cast, Lowden would be stepping into a role with a rich screen legacy. Mr. Darcy has previously been portrayed by actors including Colin Firth in the beloved 1995 BBC miniseries, Matthew Macfadyen in Joe Wright’s 2005 Oscar-nominated film, as well as earlier performance by Laurence Olivier. Each interpretation has contributed to the character’s enduring popularity and romantic mystique.

Lowden, currently starring in Slow Horses on Apple TV+, has earned acclaim and multiple nominations for his role in the gritty espionage series. His past work includes historical dramas such as War and Peace, Mary Queen of Scots and Dunkirk, showcasing both his range and comfort in period storytelling. With Slow Horses already greenlit for a sixth season, Lowden’s star continues to rise — and Pride and Prejudice could be another defining chapter.
Netflix previously ventured into Austen territory with its 2022 adaptation of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson. With Alderton’s fresh voice and the potential casting of Lowden, the streamer seems poised to offer a new take on one of literature’s most iconic love stories.
Lowden is also set to appear in Duncan Jones’ sci-fi feature Rogue Trooper, as well as the upcoming film Ella McCay, opposite Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
