We have some sad news for fans of The Recruit on Netflix. Despite a strong start and a well-established fanbase, the series will no longer be available. The reason is not an emotional one, but rather a practical decision.
Per Variety, Netflix decided to end The Recruit after two seasons due to declining viewership, high production costs, and competition from a similar show, The Night Agent. While The Recruit had a strong start, its audience shrank from 7.3 million viewers in Season 1 to 5.9 million in Season 2. Meanwhile, The Night Agent Season 2 debuted with 15.2 million viewers and performed significantly better in total watch time.
Given the similarities between both shows — both are spy thrillers centered around high-stakes political intrigue and involve intelligence agencies, specifically the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), playing key roles in their plots — Netflix prioritized The Night Agent, which had more viewers and engagement. Additionally, The Recruit's international setting meant rising production costs, making it a less financially viable option. Faced with lower returns and increasing expenses, Netflix ultimately decided to cancel the show.
