The relaunch of Daredevil on Disney+ turned out to be a strange beast: either a sequel or a rebirth. But if the whole season was rocking from side to side, then the finale of Born Again is a real victory. Fans of the Netflix version, newcomers, and even those who just missed watching good superhero TV got exactly what they were waiting for.
The last, ninth episode is Marvel at its maximum. In a good way: Matt Murdock is injured, Fisk is completely losing his mind, the streets of New York are turning into a battlefield, and next to the main character is once again Frank Castle in his classic Punisher image: with a vest, haircut and his usual gloomy determination.
Add to this Karen Page, the return of "that very" chemistry between the characters, and dialogues that you want to listen to again. The final episodes brought back the same spirit of the old Daredevil: dark, reflective, and epic, which was so lacking in the middle of the season. Matt and Frank's tandem is especially good — their arguments about morality work just as strongly as in the original series.
But the ending wasn't perfect, and it wasn't even about him. The whole season was to blame for everything, which was scattered over a bunch of storylines, new characters and filler episodes. Nine episodes turned out to be not enough to build a solid, powerful narrative, and the climax looks like a holiday that they forgot to prepare for. It's good that the old heroes are saving it.
But all the same, the finale pleases, warms the soul and gives a reason to wait for the second season. Marvel, don't relax. We believe again.
