Macaulay Culkin Almost Bought the Home Alone House — Here’s Why He Didn’t

The actor reveals a surprising connection to the iconic movie home.

Macaulay Culkin, the beloved star of the Home Alone franchise, recently shared that he nearly purchased the film’s iconic house. “I had half a mind to buy it—just for giggles,” the actor admitted earlier in December while speaking at a screening of the movie at the Rosemont Theater, according to the New York Times. Culkin explained his motivation behind the idea and why it ultimately didn’t happen.

"I thought it would be fun," Culkin admitted, referring to the idea of owning the famous Chicago-area home where much of the 1990 film was shot. He even considered turning it into a playful attraction where fans could reenact scenes from the movie, like sledding down the grand staircase or setting up Kevin’s elaborate booby traps.

Despite his enthusiasm, Culkin decided against the purchase, citing his busy family life as the main reason. "With two little ones at home, my priorities are elsewhere right now," the actor, who shares two young sons with his fiancée Brenda Song, explained.

The House’s Continued Fame

Located in Winnetka, Illinois, the Home Alone house remains a beloved landmark for fans. It was recently listed for sale at $5.25 million, boasting modern amenities like a gym, home theater, and indoor sports court—far beyond its humble movie portrayal. Culkin shared that revisiting the film with his own children has given him a fresh appreciation for its timeless charm. "Watching it with my kids brings back so many memories," he said, adding that it’s special to see how a new generation connects with Kevin McCallister’s adventures.

A Nostalgic Tour

The star has also been busy attending screenings and doing audience Q&As for the Home Alone: A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour this holiday season, which concluded on Dec. 15. He’s also brought back Kevin’s character for a humorous Uber Eats ad, delighting longtime fans of the series.

The Home Alone house may not belong to Culkin, but its legacy—and his connection to it—continues to bring joy to audiences of all ages.
