Legendary director David Lynch was working on a project for Netflix, and this has only become known now. And the fate of the series, it seems, is not to be envied. Netflix co-founder Ted Sarandos revealed details of the unfinished series in a farewell post dedicated to Lynch.
“When David Lynch approached us with the idea for the project, we agreed without hesitation,” Sarandos writes. “It was classic Lynch: mysterious, risky, but incredibly exciting.”
The project, according to Sarandos, was postponed due to the pandemic and the director’s deteriorating health.

“We made it clear that we were ready to return to him as soon as he was able to continue,” he added, calling Lynch’s work “brilliant, bold, and truly unique.”
What is known about Unrecorded Night?
Rumors about Lynch’s new series, then under the working title Wysteria, first appeared in 2019. The project was reportedly to feature his regular collaborators Naomi Watts and Laura Dern. The series was expected to consist of 13 hour-long episodes, with a budget of $85 million, and Lynch would personally write and direct each episode.

Later, the official title was revealed: Unrecorded Night. Producer Sabrina Sutherland clarified that the series had no relation to the cult Twin Peaks and was in pre-production when the pandemic stopped the process.
Cancellation or on hold?
After Sarandos's statement, the question of the project's status remains open. The Western press claimed that Netflix had finally rejected the series, despite Lynch's readiness to film. Further confusion is added by the information that another Lynch project, the animated series Snootworld, was rejected by Netflix even before the pandemic.
