Good news for Scrubs fans: after five and a half months of negotiations, the reboot of the beloved medical comedy has secured its star, Zach Braff. The deal comes after months of hurdles over pay and filming location disputes — Braff requested filming in Los Angeles instead of Vancouver, leading to a standoff that nearly derailed the project.
Recently, the two sides reached an agreement, though no filming location has been announced yet. The reboot is a complex project involving negotiations with Warner Bros TV, where creator Bill Lawrence has an exclusive deal, to carve out rights for the follow-up series. Lawrence isn’t showrunning this time but is involved in development. With Braff signed, 20th TV plans to approach other original cast members like Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes, who stars on ABC’s new drama High Potential.
Braff has expressed optimism about the reboot over the past year and envisions it as both a revival — set a decade and a half after the original — and a reboot with new characters and storylines. Braff continues his collaboration with Lawrence on projects like Ted Lasso and is also directing episodes of Shrinking and other series. Recently, he wrapped an indie film based on hero cop Kevin Simmers and will star in Girls Like Girls. He is repped by CAA, Range Media Partners, and attorney Ken Richman.
