Lars Von Trier Is Back to Business! Legendary Director to Shoot a New Film After Being Diagnosed With Parkinson’s

Filming for Lars Von Trier's upcoming film After is set to begin in Q3 of next year, though casting details have yet to be announced.

There’s significant news regarding Lars Von Trier's next project, which has recently secured funding from the Danish Film Institute, as reported by AFP. The film, titled After, is also being written by Von Trier himself. In May a European producer hinted that Von Trier was working on something new. However, details remained scarce. A script is ready, and if all goes well, Von Trier could start filming later this year.

Stellan Skarsgård, who has collaborated with Von Trier on five occasions, recently confirmed to an Italian outlet that Von Trier is indeed working on a new film. He mentioned that despite Von Trier's battle with Parkinson's disease, his condition is improving with treatment, allowing him to pursue this project.

In the fall of 2022, Von Trier revealed his Parkinson's diagnosis at the age of 66, which was devastating news for fans and the film community alike. He also announced a temporary hiatus from directing.Last August, he expressed hope that he still had a few good films left in him. It’s been a while since he directed The House That Jack Built in 2018, a dark comedy that received mixed reviews but showcased his provocative and fearless style.

Lars Von Trier has solidified his status as one of cinema's great directors, with his influence evident in films like Breaking the Waves, Melancholia, Dancer in the Dark, and Dogville.
