A24 is sinking its teeth into another cult classic, with plans underway to adapt Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 genre-bending vampire film Near Dark into a television series. The project, reported by The InSneider, comes as part of the studio’s expanding foray into prestige genre TV — a move that already includes the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake.
What makes this reboot particularly intriguing is Bigelow’s own involvement. While details remain under wraps, the Oscar-winning director is said to be attached to the project in some capacity — though whether she’ll step behind the camera again remains to be seen. Near Dark marked a major turning point in her career, laying the foundation for later hits like Point Break and culminating in her history-making Oscar win for The Hurt Locker.
The original Near Dark fused horror with the aesthetics of the American western, telling the story of a young drifter who’s drawn into a nomadic clan of vampires. With a cast that included Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, and a scene-stealing Bill Paxton, the film gained cult status thanks to its gritty atmosphere, memorable performances, and stylish violence.

Bigelow hasn't directed a feature since 2018’s Detroit, but she currently has an untitled White House thriller eyeing a release later this year. Whether she fully returns to the world of Near Dark or simply blesses it from the shadows, her presence adds serious bite to A24’s latest resurrection.
