Netflix’s ambitious Narnia reboot is taking an unexpected turn, as Greta Gerwig has chosen to start her adaptation with The Magician’s Nephew, the prequel to the classic series by C.S. Lewis. Adding to the intrigue, Daniel Craig has officially joined the cast, reportedly playing Uncle Andrew Ketterley, a key figure in the story.
Why The Magician’s Nephew?
Unlike previous adaptations, which have always begun with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Gerwig’s version will explore the origins of Narnia. This move aligns with C.S. Lewis’ own preference, as he believed The Magician’s Nephew should be read first. The film will establish major elements of the Narnia universe, including the creation of the world and the introduction of the White Witch.

Best known for playing James Bond, Craig’s casting as Uncle Andrew marks a shift to a more eccentric and morally ambiguous character. Uncle Andrew is a magician whose reckless experiments lead to the discovery of Narnia — and his thirst for power puts the young protagonists, Digory and Polly, in danger. This role gives Craig the chance to showcase a different side of his acting range.
Production Details and What’s Next
Filming for The Magician’s Nephew is set to begin in the UK from June through Christmas 2025, with a controversial IMAX release planned for November 2026. Netflix has committed to at least two films directed by Gerwig, but recent reports indicate the streaming giant has plans for a total of eight Narnia movies, expanding the franchise significantly. Casting for Digory and Polly, the story’s young protagonists, is currently underway.
With a reported budget exceeding $200M, Netflix is making a massive investment in this project. Given Gerwig’s track record with films like Barbie and her ability to reimagine classic stories, anticipation for The Magician’s Nephew is already building. However, whether fans embrace this unexpected approach remains to be seen.
