Well then, despite ongoing controversies and the tragedy that occurred a few years ago, the much-discussed film Rust has not halted production. And now, we can finally take a first look at its highly anticipated footage.
In the first official trailer, we see horseback riding, cowboys, and, rather ironically, a few death scenes. Moreover, the footage includes scenes shot by Halyna Hutchins, offering our first glimpse of her cinematography.
Alongside the trailer, the official synopsis states:
"In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named “Preacher" (Travis Fimmel).”
Directed by Joel Souza, Rust faced nearly three years of delays following the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins lost her life on set when a prop gun discharged during scene preparation, with Baldwin handling the weapon. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident. Now, after a series of manslaughter charges, court cases, dismissals, and verdicts, Rust is finally set for release in cinemas and on digital platforms on 2 May 2025.
