Hoping for a Resurrection? Forget It: 'House of the Dragon 'Hinted at What Drogon Did with Daenerys' Body After 'Game of Thrones' Finale

Still from the series 'Game of Thrones'

Everything is much more dramatic than one would like to think.

The Game of Thrones finale left many questions unanswered, and one of the most talked about is what happened to Daenerys Targaryen’s body after her death. Drogon, her loyal dragon, carried his mother’s body east, which led to many theories, including the possibility of her resurrection in Volantis. However, House of the Dragon seems to have answered this question, and it’s not what fans expected.

The Targaryens and Their Funeral Traditions

In the first season of House of the Dragon, we see the funeral of Emma Arryn, the wife of King Viserys I. Her body is cremated by the dragon Syrax, in keeping with the traditions of House Targaryen. For them, cremation is a symbol of their connection to dragons and fire. The ashes are usually placed in the Great Sept of Baelor, which highlights their unique heritage.

This moment provides a clue as to what may have happened to Daenerys’ body. If Drogon followed the traditions of his line, he likely cremated her body away from everyone rather than taking it away for resurrection.

House of Dragon still

Why is a resurrection unlikely?

While the theory that Drogon took Daenerys to the Red Priestess Kinvara for resurrection sounds intriguing, it is unlikely. Firstly, it would not add any meaning to her story, which has already logically ended. Secondly, House of the Dragon emphasizes that the Targaryens prefer cremation, which makes this theory more logical.

In addition, Daenerys’ cremation would symbolically complete her story. It all began with her emerging from Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre with three dragons. Completing her journey in the same way would bring her full circle, emphasizing her connection to fire and dragons.

“But Daenerys is immune to fire,” you might say

Yes and no. Her invulnerability is due to blood magic, which stops flowing after death. This means that her body could have been burned by dragon flames, which, like napalm, could destroy even her.
