Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu, has stated he will never make films on contemporary themes. The director has his own reservations about it.
In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Robert Eggers expressed a strong distaste for making films set in modern times. He mentioned that the thought of photographing a car makes him ill, and photographing a cellphone feels like death. He emphasized that creating a contemporary story would require capturing cellphones, which doesn't appeal to him. When asked about the possibility of working closer to modern times,
Eggers was open but clarified that he had certain conditions.
“I might go potentially to 1950 but before World War II is more inviting for my imagination.”
After the success of his vampire film Nosferatu, Eggers is continuing to create unique horror films. While his latest film still has to go through awards season, there are already plans for what's next. One confirmed project is Werewulf, an original take on a werewolf movie that Eggers will make with Focus Features, the same company behind Nosferatu. Additionally, Eggers is rumored to be working on a modern sequel to Labyrinth, the 1986 musical fantasy starring Jennifer Connelly.
