Bertha aims for a prize that could elevate her family to unimaginable heights, while George risks everything on a daring railroad gambit that could revolutionize industry — or ruin him entirely. Meanwhile, across the street, the Brook household faces turmoil as Agnes refuses to accept Ada’s new role as lady of the house. Peggy encounters a charming doctor from Newport whose family disapproves of her career ambitions. As New York races toward an uncertain future, their ambitions threaten to cost them what they hold most dear.
