It’s no easy feat picking a favourite from the extraordinary collection of soundtracks by the legendary composer Hans Zimmer. But what does Zimmer himself say? In a candid interview, Zimmer reveals the stories behind his iconic scores and shares his personal favourites.
Zimmer admits that The Lion King wasn’t initially on his radar.
"I didn’t really want to do animation," he confesses. However, the film’s deeply emotional themes of loss unexpectedly struck a chord with him. "My father died when I was 6 years old," he explains. "I never dealt with it, and suddenly I had to.”
The music he crafted for the film became a powerful way to confront his own past, transforming The Lion King into more than just a Disney classic.

When asked about his best work, Zimmer points to Interstellar as a standout.
"There’s something about it, really great,” he says, reflecting on the vast, emotional score that perfectly complements the film’s exploration of time and space.
Zimmer also offered a unique take on some of his most celebrated soundtracks in a 'vs; format, comparing his favourite projects:
- The Lion King vs. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Lion King wins for its profound emotional impact.
- The Lion King vs. Gladiator: Again, The Lion King takes the crown for its heart and depth.
- The Lion King vs. Inception: Inception edges ahead, with its innovative and cerebral score.
- Inception vs. Interstellar: Interstellar wins this round with its atmospheric, soul-stirring music.
- Interstellar vs. Dune: Still immersed in the creative process for Dune, Zimmer leaves this one up in the air.
Though he holds a special place in his heart for Sherlock Holmes, Zimmer acknowledges that The Dark Knight ultimately stands out for its game-changing score.
