Guadagnino in Talks With 'Very Exciting Performers' for New 'American Psycho' Adaptation

CinemaCon crowd gets first tease of Guadagnino’s bold vision.

Luca Guadagnino is officially gearing up for his own take on American Psycho, the cult 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Speaking in a video message during Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon, the director teased early details about the new adaptation — one that promises to stand apart from previous versions.

"We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much," Guadagnino said.

The script comes from Scott Z. Burns, known for The Report and The Bourne Ultimatum. "He’s doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely," the director added.

Guadagnino made clear that the film is not a remake of the 2000 version starring Christian Bale, but rather a fresh adaptation of the original novel. He also revealed he’s currently in "conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads," though casting details remain under wraps.

Guadagnino expressed hope to return to CinemaCon in the future with first footage. Meanwhile, his film After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, is due out later this year.
