Get Ready for 'Freaky Tales': A Thrilling Blend of Punk, Rap, and Mystery Featuring an Alien Twist

Poster art for 'Freaky Tales' (2024)

Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn and Jay Ellis on the new poster.

Freaky Tales is a genre-defying delight. Come for the mad mix of intricately linked plotlines, and stay for the joyous display of vintage breakdancing during the end credits. The film is a collection of short stories set in 1987 Oakland. The main characters are punks, rappers, a corrupt cop, a debt collector and an NBA star who encounter each other and a mysterious and possibly alien entity.

The performances embrace the gonzo spirit throughout, with Ellis and Pascal expertly blending soulfulness and tough-guy grit. Special mention goes to Thorne and Normani for their comic energy, as well as Ben Mendelsohn, whose malevolently humorous presence elevates the film. Additionally, the late Angus Cloud makes a memorable appearance as a criminal stooge, showcasing his talent in one of his final roles.

The film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors of Captain Marvel. Freaky Tales will be released overseas on April 4.
