On screen, they’re a captivating couple. Off screen, they’re now tangled in something far more surreal than any script. Just when Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s mind-bending film Together was building festival buzz, a lawsuit dropped — and it’s serving more drama than the actual movie.
The indie horror, set to hit theatres this August, features a bizarre love story where two people are physically fused into one. But this surreal twist may not be as original as it seems. A 2023 film called Better Half claims it told that story first — right down to the Plato quotes.
According to the suit, the original script was sent to Franco and Brie’s agents back in 2020. Rejected then, reimagined now? The plaintiffs think so. The lawsuit alleges that Together shares striking similarities with Better Half, including specific scenes and themes, prompting accusations of idea theft. The filmmakers behind Better Half are demanding not only recognition but compensation for what they claim is stolen intellectual property.

Named in the lawsuit: not just the stars, but director Michael Shanks, agency WME, and distributor Neon. WME calls the claims "frivolous." But as Together inches closer to release, this off-screen controversy might be the real showstopper.
