Johnny Depp is stepping back into the spotlight with Day Drinker, a new thriller from Lionsgate that reunites him with longtime co-star Penélope Cruz. The studio has released a first-look image from the film, sparking immediate buzz — not only for the unexpected casting reunion, but also because Depp appears nearly unrecognizable in the role.
Directed by Marc Webb and now filming in Spain, Day Drinker centers on a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) who becomes entangled with a mysterious guest played by Depp. Their connection leads them into the orbit of a criminal figure portrayed by Cruz, with twists that run deeper than expected.
For Depp, the film marks a return to major U.S. productions following European projects like Jeanne du Barry and Modi. It’s his first Hollywood role since being dropped from Fantastic Beasts in 2020 amid his legal battles with Amber Heard.

The script was written by Zach Dean, with producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner and Dean himself. 30West is executive producing, continuing their collaboration with Lionsgate after Power Ballad starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
Depp and Cruz last appeared together in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Blow, and Murder on the Orient Express. Their return in a darker, more modern setting has already stirred anticipation
