Eye Patches, Parrots, and More: 5 Pirate Myths Movies Made Us Believe

In reality, sea-robbers were far from Jack Sparrow’s portrayal.

Hollywood films, especially the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, have created iconic pirate stereotypes that audiences have embraced. However, reality often strays far from the silver screen depictions — sometimes for the better. Here are five common myths about pirate life that many believe, thanks to cinematic exaggerations.

Pirate flags were all the same

Hollywood frequently depicts pirate ships flying black flags adorned with a skull and crossbones. In reality, pirate flags were much more diverse, featuring various symbols. The iconic black flag with a skull and crossbones was actually rare.

Eye patches hid wounds

In movies, eye patches are often shown as a way to conceal injuries or give pirates a menacing look. In reality, pirates used eye patches to adapt to darkness. Pirate ships lacked consistent lighting, so if a pirate needed to move below deck during a fight, removing the patch would allow one eye to adjust to the dark quickly, giving them an advantage.

Parrots were pirates’ best friends

A parrot perched on a pirate’s shoulder is another staple of pirate imagery in movies. In truth, pirates didn’t keep parrots as pets. This trope was invented to add color to pirate characters. Instead, pirates often kept cats on board, both as a symbol of good luck and to catch rats on the ship.

Pirates buried treasure

And they marked it with an X on a map, right? Not exactly. There are only a handful of historical cases where pirates attempted to bury treasure, and these were largely unsuccessful. Burying gold and jewels made little sense unless pirates were being pursued. Moreover, pirates didn’t create treasure maps because if captured, the maps would fall into enemy hands, making the treasure easy to find.

All pirates were bloodthirsty and cruel

Movies often portray pirates as ruthless and constantly hunting for their next victim. In reality, pirate crews usually targeted wealthy merchant ships. Total destruction of ships or large-scale violence was uncommon. Pirates preferred to seize their targets with minimal losses while maximizing their profits.
