Exploring 'The Last of Us': Key Differences Between Game and Series

Stills from the series 'The Last of Us'

A faithful adaptation with major differences in story, casting, and details.

While HBO’s The Last of Us stays true to the game’s core narrative, it introduces notable changes. The timeline is shifted, with the outbreak beginning in 2003 instead of 2013, and the main events happening in 2023 instead of 2033. The show also expands character backstories, such as Bill and Frank’s relationship, which is only briefly mentioned in the game.

Game vs. Show Cast

Some actors return from the game, while others are recast. Merle Dandridge reprises her role as Marlene, but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey replace Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson as Joel and Ellie. Baker and Johnson, however, appear in cameo roles, honoring their original characters.

Major Differences

Infection Transmission: In the game, the Cordyceps infection spreads through spores, requiring gas masks. The show removes this, using tendrils instead.

Expanded Lore: The series adds flashbacks explaining the virus’s origins in Indonesia.

Character Changes: Supporting characters, like Henry and Sam, have different backstories, adding depth to their arcs.

Both the game and the show stand on their own, but the game offers a deeper emotional experience through interactive storytelling. Players actively shape Joel and Ellie’s journey, making it a more immersive experience.
