The film is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Harris, which, in fact, is inspired by existing facts about the process of electing a new Pope after the death of the previous one. The plot centers on Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, who is tasked with organizing the election of a new head of the Catholic Church after the sudden death of the current Pope.
As Lawrence gets more and more involved in the process, he discovers unpleasant facts about the candidates for office, which can shake the foundations of the church and affect the election results.
